When I was a graduate student, the program was in Old Chem the first year and we were the first class in the new Sanford building. Sunny Ladd was one of the anchor faculty members then. Peter Feaver was a recent hire at Duke. He was a mentor to me and became a friend. I had offers from Johns Hopkins and Columbia, but I came to Duke because of my advisor at Stanford, Condoleezza Rice. She said, “Jon, go to Duke. You will learn important skills that you will use throughout your career.” She was absolutely right. Advice for current students? Always be building your network: up, sideways and down. Networking with people in junior positions is underestimated. You should do it to give back, but also to build life-long partnerships. And today’s mentees are tomorrow’s leaders. – Jon Rosenwasser MPP’95 Minority Budget Director, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Rosenwasser works for Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
