Humans of Duke Sanford

“I run a thing called Root Causes which is a group based in the med school that does various things related to service, education, and advocacy around social drivers of health (the artist formerly known as social determinants of health). This past week or two we’ve been planning a home food delivery program for a lot of our patients. We used to give food at the clinic twice a month at the Duke Outpatient Clinic, coinciding with a diabetes education clinic group that the clinic runs. The clinic that is mostly a safety net clinic like a lot of Medicare and Medicaid patients end up there.
.
So this home food delivery thing has been a plus and a minus in the sense that for myself and my teammates we’ve sort of found our place but we’ve still got a lot of extra work. We did a limited set of home deliveries for a program with the group before, but this will be a lot bigger than it has been. There’s an additional layer of, “How do we do this thing in a way that is good with food safety and good with physical distancing and good with preventing the spread of COVID?” So that’s been a fun but challenging opportunity.”
