“I live in Wuhan, in the central part of China. You know it has a nickname, it’s called the Oriental Chicago. It is located near the middle of the Yangtze river.

It’s called Oriental Chicago because you know in America, Chicago is located in the middle of the country and it is surrounded by agriculture and is near the Mississippi river. It also has a lot of industrial aspects. Wuhan is in the central part of China. If you draw a triangle from Beijing to Shanghai to Guangzhou Wuhan is in the middle, it is the same distance from all three, just about 1000km.

In my hometown and in the province surrounding it, they are highly prosperous but the pollution problem is also serious because we have many industries, like steel, and the air quality is quite low. In recent years we used natural gas to replace coal, so the air quality has improved a lot but the greenhouse gases are still going up.

When we learn in China, most of the classes have a lot of students so the professor doesn’t really talk to us and we seldom get feedback  or have conversations or other kinds of interactions. It’s cool in America that when you get involved with the classroom you learn more and you can gain knowledge in a more vivid way.” ~ Wang Yan Zhe, Visiting for Program on Planning and Implementing Public Policy
